Well Visits & Preventive Care

Routine well visits give families a dedicated opportunity to check in on a child’s health, development, and changing needs. At SouthernMED Pediatrics, these appointments are tailored to your child’s age and stage, from the newborn period through the teen years.

During a well visit, your provider will review medical history, measure growth and vital signs, complete a comprehensive exam, and discuss topics such as milestones, nutrition, sleep, behavior, school, and safety. Recommended screenings and immunizations may also be provided. By tracking your child’s progress over time, well visits help identify concerns early and encourage healthy habits for the years ahead.

PREVENTIVE PEDIATRIC CARE

Keep Your Child Healthy and Thriving with Routine Wellness Visits

Well visits offer more than a routine checkup. They give your family time to discuss growth, development, daily habits, and emerging concerns while helping your child stay current with recommended screenings and immunizations.

Comprehensive wellness visits focused on growth, development, and prevention help support long-term health at every stage of childhood.

Routine wellness visits are an important part of pediatric care and should be scheduled regularly, even when your child feels healthy. These appointments allow our providers to monitor growth, assess developmental milestones, and deliver preventive care based on your child’s age and medical needs. They also give families time to discuss nutrition, sleep, behavior, school, and other questions that arise as children grow.

Well visits are recommended for children of all ages, from the newborn months through adolescence. Regular appointments help providers recognize potential concerns early and keep your child’s preventive care on track.

During a well visit, your child may receive:

  • Height, weight, and other growth measurements
  • Developmental and behavioral screenings
  • Recommended immunizations
  • Vision, hearing, and preventive health screenings
  • Practical advice on nutrition, sleep, safety, and routines

Keeping up with regular wellness visits helps your pediatrician follow your child’s development and address changing health needs over time.

What to Expect

Medical History Review

Your provider will begin by reviewing your child’s medical history, medications, allergies, and any changes since the last visit. The conversation is tailored to your child’s age and may include feeding, sleep, behavior, school progress, physical activity, and family questions.

What to Expect

Growth and Vital Signs Check

Height, weight, vital signs, and age-appropriate screenings help track changes over time. Your provider will also complete a comprehensive physical exam and review growth and developmental milestones to identify concerns that may benefit from closer attention.

What to Expect

Nutrition and Lifestyle Guidance

Before the visit ends, your provider will discuss topics relevant to your child’s current stage, such as nutrition, sleep, safety, physical activity, behavior, and school. You will also receive guidance about immunizations, follow-up, and the next recommended well visit.

Well Visits & Preventive Care FAQs

Parenthood comes with plenty of questions. Our pediatric care team is here to provide clear answers and practical guidance to help you make confident decisions about your child’s care.

  • How often should my child have a wellness visit? New Patients

Well-child visits are recommended throughout childhood to track your child’s growth, development, and overall health. Babies and toddlers typically need more frequent appointments during their first few years, while children ages 3 and older generally receive an annual wellness exam.

Your pediatric provider will follow the recommended well-child visit schedule and let you know when it’s time to arrange your child’s next checkup.

  • What if my child is sick on the day of the appointment? Appointments & Scheduling

If your child becomes sick on the day of their wellness visit, please contact our office before the appointment. Depending on their symptoms, we may recommend rescheduling the well-child visit or converting it to a pediatric sick visit so their immediate health concerns can be properly evaluated and treated.

This allows your child to receive appropriate care for their illness while keeping the wellness appointment focused on preventive care, growth, and development.

  • Are sports or school forms completed during this visit? School, Sports, & Camp Physicals

Yes, school, sports, and camp forms can often be completed during your child’s annual wellness visit. Because a well-child appointment includes a comprehensive physical exam and review of your child’s health history, it is an ideal time to address participation requirements.

Please bring all required paperwork to the appointment so your pediatric provider can review and complete the forms during the visit.

  • What age do wellness visits start? New Patients

Pediatric wellness visits begin soon after birth, usually within the first few days after your newborn comes home. Well-child appointments are scheduled more frequently throughout infancy and early childhood to monitor growth, development, and overall health. As children get older, these preventive visits typically continue once a year.
