Bio and Work History
Karen earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of South Carolina. After working as a juvenile probation officer for nearly 20 years, she returned to USC to earn a formal degree in counseling and pursue her longtime interest in becoming a counselor.
Karen spent 20 years as a school counselor while also working as a part-time licensed therapist for 10 years. She served as a high school director of guidance for seven years before becoming the first full-time school counselor for her district’s alternative K–12 program. Karen collaborated with USC professors to implement mentoring programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She also mentored and supervised USC counseling students for nearly 15 years.
After retiring from the state and school system in June 2025, Karen transitioned into full-time therapy. At SouthernMED Counseling and Sweetgrass Pediatrics, she continues her work with children and adolescents while expanding her services to young adults and older generations. She also remains involved with USC by presenting to and mentoring students in the psychology and criminal justice departments.
