After Hours Support
Questions about your child’s health don’t always arise during office hours. SouthernMED’s nurse triage line offers support after regular hours, helping you understand your next steps when your child isn’t feeling well.
Guidance When Your Child Isn’t Feeling Well
A new symptom or a change in your child’s condition can leave you wondering whether to wait until morning or seek care sooner. Our nurse triage line gives you an opportunity to talk through your concerns with a nurse who can help assess the situation based on the information you share.
During the conversation, the nurse will ask about your child’s symptoms, when they began, relevant medical history, and any medications already given. They may also ask about eating, drinking, activity, and other changes you’ve noticed. Depending on your child’s needs, the nurse can discuss home care, recommend an office visit, or direct you to more immediate medical attention.

Preparing for Your Conversation
Having a few details ready before speaking with the nurse can help make the conversation more useful and ensure important information is easy to share.
Be prepared to provide:
- Your child’s name and date of birth
- When symptoms started, how they are now, and whether they have changed
- Temperature, including when and how it was taken
- Medications given, including the name, amount, and time of the most recent dose
- Relevant medical conditions and known allergies
- Changes in eating, drinking, sleep, activity, or bathroom habits
Stay near your child during the call, if possible, so you can observe how they are feeling and behaving. You may also want to have a pen and paper nearby to write down the nurse’s recommendations, symptoms to watch for, and any suggested follow-up.
